An honest check

Which of these sounds familiar?

The exam is its own skill.

It does not watch you coach. It measures whether you can read a scenario, name the competency at play, and choose the response ICF expects. Knowing the competencies at that depth, nuances included, is a preparation problem, and preparation is fixable.

The credential feels bigger than the coaching.

You know how to coach. But the competencies, the markers, the paperwork make the credential feel like a different job.

Renewal is closer than you think.

Ten hours sounds small until the deadline arrives. A clear path beats a last-minute scramble, and the hours should sharpen your coaching, not just renew your credential.

If one of these is yours, you do not need more generic prep. You need a mentor who knows the competencies cold, and who will tell you the truth.

Beyond the checklist

Embody the competencies. Coach at a new level.

The competencies are not a list to memorise for an exam. Each carries nuances that separate adequate coaching from coaching at the ACC and PCC level, and the exam tests whether you can spot them inside a scenario. Mentor coaching works through them against your own coaching, so the knowledge holds on exam day and your practice rises to the level the credential describes.

The progression

Clarity, courage, commitment, character.

Clarity (name the gap).

You will know exactly what the credential requires and where you stand against it. The gap has a name, and the name has a plan.

Courage (be seen).

Most growth hides in the moments you would rather not watch. You will watch them anyway, with a mentor beside you, and hear plainly what is strong and what needs to change.

Commitment (do the reps).

Insight is not the finish line. Between sessions you practise, integrate the feedback, and return with evidence of change, until the new way of coaching holds.

Character (become the coach).

The credential is the marker, not the point. You finish with the presence and skill your clients can feel, and the self-awareness to keep growing.

Your coach

I've sat in your chair.

I was very good at performing. For years I led a multimillion-dollar organization with multiple departments, where high performance was expected everywhere. And the performance was quietly creating anxiety in me and everyone around me. There was simply no playbook for the complexity and change I was navigating.

Coaching changed that. It made me a better leader and helped me build a better life.

That's why I mentor coaches now: the same shift, passed on, in service of the coaches their clients will feel.

I hold the ICF Mentor Coach Specialization and the Professional Certified Coach credential, with more than 3,000 hours of coaching behind me. My Master of Arts in Executive and Organizational Coaching is from Royal Roads University, and I received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for community leadership.
